In Part # 3 of my “Because you did not know” series we met Cindy .http://alanakhaase.com/society/because-you-did-not-know-part-3-cindys-castle-was-a-jail-cell/
Cindy met and married Crazy before she knew he was crazy and found herself living in an isolated castle that hid the physical, mental, sexual and financial abuse that went on behind its tightly locked doors. I have had many requests for an update to this story and people asking me if “Cindy” was ok? She is not…
During her marriage, Cindy was not allowed to access several rooms of her own home due to more locked doors and Crazy would not allow her to work and she only had access to money for household necessities. It all monitored as Crazy would not allow her access to cash. She had a credit card he constantly monitored to ensure she only spent money on the household expenses. Her car had a GPS tracker and escape was impossible.
After being raped and strangled Cindy managed to call the police and Crazy was arrested. With Crazy behind bars Cindy was finally able to file a restraining order and divorce papers.
What followed this is a nightmare of epic proportions involving legal and financial abuse that continues to this day.
When we first met Cindy, she and her sons were still living in the marital residence that had been foreclosed on. Cindy was in legal proceedings to forestall their eviction as Crazy was legally supposed to make the payments and was court ordered to catch up the payments and clear the mortgage.
He did not.
Cindy was able to secure a section 8 housing voucher and she and her sons were spared the indignity of being thrown out on the streets by mere days.
Cindy and her boys now live in an 800 square foot apartment that is infested with mold.
Both boys have special medical needs and have been sick constantly since moving and the exposure to mold which the landlord only half ass is doing anything about to pretend compliance with federal regulations. Cindy was provided with fans and a dehumidifier that she cannot run without leaving her door open and unlocked to run an electrical drop cord to a plug in outside. Not a good option for a disabled woman with a lifetime restraining order on a rapist.
The boys have had to go to the doctor and Cindy to the ER several times now with respiratory problems.
In a further slap in the face from the system, now that Cindy no longer has a mortgage the state took away her food stamps. Without the debt she no longer qualified. This state assistance was the lifeline she depended on to feed two hungry boys.
Crazy now owes over $630,000 in unpaid child support.
You will recall that Crazy fled Massachusetts for Nevada and now resides in Las Vegas, still running a very successful business online and on the strip. He continues to flaunt the law living the good life while his two sons are being supported by you, the taxpayer.
A man making a comfortable 6-7 figures a YEAR owes over half a million in unpaid child support and faces ZERO consequences.
However, taxpayers are facing the consequences.
Taxpayers are paying for that section 8 housing.
Taxpayers are paying for the ER visits, and medical care.
But don’t worry! You, the taxpayer, saved a few dollars by cutting off Cindy’s food stamps. No big deal, you don’t have to live with two hungry boys.
Every so often Crazy will send in a payment of $162.00 sometimes he even adds a few cents to make it $162.38! What a prince!
This year, after a few months of not even sending his $162 the Mass DOR contacted Nevada. Nevada responded that they were in the process of closing the case because Crazy told them he had moved back to Mass. and that he and Cindy were back together!
Now maybe I am the Crazy one, but in a LEGAL PROCEEDING do you not have to provide PROOF? Cindy did, including her lifetime restraining order and new address in the mold box.
And speaking of legal proceedings, Cindy has been to see her congressman, the governor and even the district attorney and state’s attorney with her truckload of legal documentation.
When speaking with Governor Charlie Baker’s aid, Cindy was told, “Child support is personal matter, and that is the Governor’s position.”
Hopefully the Governor’s new executive order to reconstitute the Governor’s Council to address sexual assault and domestic violence will advise him that 98% of domestic violence survivors have also been victims of financial abuse. And that financial abuse is often the last way an abuser can still abuse and get away with it. And get away with it at taxpayers’ expense.
When speaking with her district attorney about the egregious violations of state and federal laws pertaining to child support, Cindy was told that they would not prosecute for fear of “setting a precedent”.
A precedent for what? Prosecuting deadbeats? Enforcing the law? Protecting innocent children from starvation? Oh, let’s NOT set a precedent for any of that!
This willingness to protect deadbeats at taxpayer expense is why the United States of America has over $117 Billion in child support arrears today.
Financial abuse IS abuse, and YOU are paying for it.
Cindy stated, “I want him held accountable. I want the system held accountable. The repeated brush off by officials is more abuse. How do they justify letting him get out of taking care of his children?”
I asked Cindy if she had anything to add to this update and she replied, “I have no faith in the system anymore. Neither do my two sons. None. No faith, no hope. I feel completely hopeless, helpless and angry.”
Again, if you have any answers for Cindy about these issues respond in the comments.
