A compass does you no good without a reference point to begin with. If you know where you are going, you can figure out how to get there and how to get back, if need be.
But if you don’t know where you are going, that spinning dial on your iPhone is nothing more than a cute app.
I think this is a huge problem in today’s world. Most of us don’t really know where we are, where we want to go or how to get there. Or we have been blown so far astray by the storms of life we don’t know how to navigate back to our true path.
So if our iPhones are not doing the job, how do we navigate life?
We need a chart to give us direction. People use many different things as “charts” to navigate life. Parental examples, college degree’s, advise of friends, the “School of Hard Knocks”, self help books, religious texts, the list goes on and on…. For me, I use with no apology, the Bible as my chart. In this text I have found everything I need to navigate around hazards like anxiety, disappointment, anger, fear, isolation, confusion, expectations and other storms of life. I find direction to navigate in community with other who may not believe like I do. And that is OK!
I want to treat everyone with respect, engage, and have dialogue with them. This is how maps get read and the lost get found.
“No man is an island” said John Donne in his Devotions for Emergent Occasions in 1624.
So here we are my fellow navigators. Adrift with each other, our various compass’s and charts. Let’s voyage along and end up somewhere good!
